Alton is located in Belknap County, New Hampshire.  Alton is 41 miles from Manchester, and 88 miles from Portland.  It is situated at the crossroads of Routes 11 and 28, which provides access to the seacoast and the Concord and Manchester areas.

Alton is part of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.  It includes five miles of frontage along the Alton Bay, the southeastern point of Lake Winnipesaukee, the southeastern side of Wolfeboro Harbor and the larger islands in the southeast end of the lake.   It also is home to the village of Alton Bay, a resort located next to Lake Winnipesaukee. 

Alton primary industry is tourism.  The town offers year round recreational opportunities such as swimming, boating, skiing and snowmobiling.  Alton is home to The Harold S. Gilman Museum.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Alton was home to 4,502 residents.  This included 1,825 households and 1,295 families.  The average family size was 2.93 and the average household size was 2.47.  Alton is comprised of 63.1 square miles of land.  It also includes 19.0 square miles of inland water, which is the largest of any New Hampshire town.

Alton Real Estate and Homes:  In 2000, there were 3,522 homes and an average of 56 homes (houses / condos) per square mile.  In 2007, it was estimated that real estate in Alton, New Hampshire was comprised of a total of 4,146 homes.  This included 3,705 single family homes and 241 multi-unit homes.  19% of homes in Alton are occupied by renters.
