Hinsdale is located in Cheshire County, in the southwest corner of New Hampshire.  The town is bordered to the north by Chesterfield, to the east by Winchester, to the south by Northfield, Massachusetts, and to the west by Brattleboro, Vermont.
The town of Hinsdale is also bordered by Pisgah State Park (the largest state park in New Hampshire, shared by Hinsdale, Winchester and Chesterfield) to the east and by Wantastiquet Mountain State Forest to the north.  Hinsdale lies entirely within the Connecticut River watershed.

Hinsdale was chartered in 1753 by the first New Hampshire governor, Benning Wentworh.  The town was named for Colonel Ebenezer Hinsdale.  The house he built in Hinsdale was the first frame building in town.

In addition to being an excelling farm community, Hinsdale is an industrious town, particularly in the manufacturing of paper.  Hinsdale’s Main Street is home to the oldest continuously operated post office in the country.

Hinsdale is comprised of 20.7 square miles of land and 2.1 square miles of water.  The area contains steep valleys, and river valleys which the Connecticut and Ashuelot Rivers flow through.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Hinsdale’s population at that time included 4,082 people, 1,622 households, and 1,088 families.
